Internet of Things: Businesses Selling More than Just Products

The minute that a business incorporates the Internet of Things with its products, it transforms from a brand selling products to a company in the business of selling data, too.

Lots and lots of important data.

Once a product boasts Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, it can sell on two fronts: the product itself, and the promise of “smart performance” as the product responds to data it collects, analyzes, and communicates over time.

The product may have the ability to learn user behavior, react to environmental changes, and even take action based on geography, weather, and historical data – just to name a few.

With the powers of IoT, products can also store and transmit intelligence for other purposes, such as: troubleshooting, developing next-gen products, and marketing…things that are designed to empower the business with insights into consumer habits and use patterns, but ultimately make a better product for the end user.

Selling data by way of products is an important proposition for businesses as we engage further with the Internet of Things. We predict that we will see IoT devices move from the exception to the expectation.

For example, home thermostats and lighting automation controlled by phones and tablets may seem like nice-to-haves today, but we are betting that in the future these devices will seem more like need-to-haves. Just look at where we are with mobile phones today compared with a decade ago (a time when, believe it or not, phone calls outpaced text messages).

IoT devices are becoming more prolific throughout various industries as brands recognize the value in leveraging data they have the power to gather, store, communicate and interpret within products they are already manufacturing.

The additional data layer is going to be the competitive advantage for some brands as we move into new standards of doing business, where data-enabled, data-rich devices are the norm.

  • Vedams is a highly valuable addition to Xyratex’s own global product test organization. With product availability and reliability requirements being key differentiators for Xyratex in its markets, the need for exhaustive, rigorous and in-depth functional testing is critical.

The knowledge required to perform at this level, being very data storage focused, is not easily obtained but I have been impressed by the way these skills have been cultivated and the low levels of staff turnover.
